Social Services
Throughout their history the Sisters of Mercy have reached out to help those most in need and have found innovative ways to respond to those needs. Social services provided through the Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community helps women and children, adults with special needs, those who are homeless, those new to the United States and in need of special assistance and the elderly in their homes. The Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community sponsors seven different social services organizations: Catherine McAuley Center meets the housing needs of women by providing temporary shelter for women and children in crisis and helping them obtain permanent housing that is safe, decent and affordable. Mercy Center, Asbury Park, NJ, provides hope, help and healing to people in the community through education, emergency and family services. Mercy Center in the Bronx, NY, a community center for women and their families, offers programs and services that empower women to reach their full potential and become agents of change in their families and communities. The Dorothy Bennett Mercy Center, a community center in Brooklyn, offers an after school program for neighborhood children, adult education classes, and assistance with housing, immigration and family issues. MercyFirst sponsors family support and after-school programs, foster homes and adoption services, community group homes and campus-based residential treatment programs, medical and mental-health care, for over 4,000 neglected children and adolescents in need. Mercy Home supports persons with developmental disabilities in living full and interesting lives through residential, supportive, and respite programs. The staff at Mercy Care for the Adironacks provide holistic health education, spiritual services, and friendship to elders living in their own homes in the communities of the Adirondacks. Throughout the Mid-Atlantic Community, Sisters of Mercy and their sponsored ministries provide service and care to people in need with mercy. |
