Sisters of Mercy are women who commit their lives to God through the public profession of vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and the service of the poor, sick and ignorant. As disciples of Jesus and in the spirit of Venerable Catherine McAuley, their foundress, they live lives of prayer, community and service.

Their mission of service impels them to serve all people, most especially those who are poor and marginalized with a special concern for women and children. They do this through ministries of education and health care, social, spiritual and pastoral services that seek to empower others to live full lives with hope and dignity. Those sisters no longer able to be in active ministry continue their service through the ministry of prayer offered daily for the needs of God’s people.

Animated by the Gospel and passion for the poor, the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas commit their lives and resources to act in solidarity with the economically poor of the world, especially women and children; women seeking fullness of life and equality in church and society; and one another as they embrace our multicultural and international reality.
