Follow Sun Safety Tips for Your Skin


image of sun with sunglasses clip artPeople love the warm sun. The sun's rays make us feel good and, in the short term, make us look good. But our love affair isn't a two-way street. Exposure to sun causes many of the wrinkles and age spots on our faces and is the number one cause of skin cancer. Nothing completely reverses sun damage, but it's never too late to begin protecting yourself. Learn how the sun changes your skin and these tips to protect it.


It's Bug Bite Season!

Here are some reminders to help protect you from harmful bug bites.

  • If you are using insect repellent: 1) Always follow the product label instructions. 2) Reapply insect repellent as directed. Do not spray repellent on the skin under clothing. If you are also using sunscreen, apply sunscreen first and insect repellent second. 3) Find the insect repellent that is right for you.
  • If you are in in an area where ticks are present: 1) Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. 2) Treat items, such as boots, pants, socks, and tents, with permethrin or buy permethrin-treated clothing and gear. Permethrin-treated clothing will protect you after multiple washings. See product information to find out how long the protection will last. If treating items yourself, follow the product instructions. Do not use permethrin products directly on skin. 3) Learn more about preventing tick bites.

Make June your personal intellectual health and wellness month! People who are intellectually healthy are curious and never stop learning. So during these relaxing summer days, challenge yourself with stimulating reading. Start with the Mid-Atlantic Community Life Transitions and Health and Wellness Resource Guide, pp. 40-44, for inspiring thoughts on wisdom and learning, and several resources to explore. Plus, read the articles " Debunking Myths About the Aging Brain " and " The Ten Habits of Highly Effective Brains ."


Embrace Aging

It's not the passage of time that makes it so hard to get older. It's ageism," claims writer and activist Ashton Applewhite. In this 12-minute video, she shares how prejudice pits us against our future selves. "Aging is not a problem to be fixed or a disease to be cured," she says. "It is a natural, powerful, lifelong process that unites us all." In her research, she discovered how most people do not end up in assisted living facilities or develop dementia, as many narratives go. Focus on Eye Health

April is Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month. Most of us have eye problems at some time in our life. Learn the 19 most common eye problems people experience and how to treat them. Also, see the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services website page, “Aging and Your Eyes.”


Put on a Happy Face!

image of happy face flowersMatthew 6:16* reminds us that when we are fasting, we should not go around with a gloomy face—an important reminder during the Lenten season. Health experts remind us that our attitude is linked to our health and sense of well-being. Lent is a good time to shed negativity and forgive grievances, while we are downsizing other aspects of our lives. This article gives some simple practices for boosting both our happiness quotient and our health. So put on a happy face...spring will be here soon!

Take Care of Your Heart

February is American Heart Month (also known as Heart Health Month). Statistics show that women are at higher risk for heart disease, and, though heart disease can occur at any age, by age 65 every woman should have a cardiology check-up. To help you care for your heart, see these tips and links provided by the Life Development Committee. Happy Valentine’s Day!
