Participating in the healing ministry of Jesus by responding to the needs of those who are sick was one of the things that characterized the Sisters of Mercy from their earliest foundation in Dublin. Today, there are Sisters of Mercy who are doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, psychologists, medical records specialists, pharmacists, patient advocates and a variety of other health care professions.
The Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community co-sponsor with other religious communities two health systems – Catholic Health East and Catholic Healthcare Partners. Within each of these organizations are regional systems with long standing connections to the Sisters of Mercy. These include Mercy Health System of Southeastern Pennsylvania and Mercy Health Partners in Scranton, PA.
Mercy Health System of Southeastern Pennsylvania is comprised of four hospitals and a continuing care network that includes home care, a long-term care facility and an elder adult housing complex. Mercy Health System of Southeastern Pennsylvania is a member of Catholic Health East.
Mercy Health Partners, located in northeastern Pennsylvania, is a member of Catholic Healthcare Partners. This organization is comprised of Mercy Hospital in Scranton, PA, Mercy Special Care Hospital in Nanticoke, PA, and a variety of community-based programs to respond to the health needs in the greater Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area.
Both organizations provide compassionate, innovative, high quality care that improves the health of the communities they serve. Access to healthcare and outreach in the communities, especially to those who are poor and marginalized, are hallmarks of both systems. Through compassionate care and outstanding clinical processes, patients and their families receive superior services and spiritual support.
