A commitment to education has been a hallmark of the Sisters of Mercy since their founding in Dublin. Sisters of Mercy from the Mid-Atlantic Community serve in all areas of Catholic education and in the public sector. Sisters serve in parish elementary schools and religious education programs, in diocesan and private secondary schools, in colleges and universities, alternative middle school programs, adult education and literacy programs – any place where there is a need for quality education.
The Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community sponsors three elementary schools, one alternative school for girls, one vocational school, one school for children and young adults with special needs, and seven secondary schools. The teachers and staff at these schools touch the lives of over 3,000 students each day in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. At all of these schools, the students, teachers, administrators, faculty, and staff share the mission, charism, and traditions of the Sisters of Mercy. The Institute of the Sisters of Mercy sponsors four colleges/universities in the Mid-Atlantic Community: Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ, Misericordia University in Dallas, PA, Gwynedd-Mercy College in Gwynedd Valley, PA, and Mount Aloysius College in Cresson, PA. Over 8,700 undergraduate and graduate students attend these fine academic institutions and learn the spirit, history, and heritage of the Sisters of Mercy.
